AGEISM IS REAL

I was pushed aside because of my age.
What surprised me most was how many others were too—quietly, and often alone.

This blog is a place for shared stories, hard truths, and practical tools for anyone facing age bias at work or in life.

Welcome to Ageism is Real.

A Note on Why This Blog Is Back

February 9, 2026

This site went quiet for a while—not because the issue faded, but because my perspective changed. Time gave me distance from the initial experience, and with that came a clearer, steadier voice.

I’m returning to Ageism Is Real with a focus on refinement rather than reaction. The core questions remain the same, but the work now aims for clarity, context, and usefulness—grounded in lived experience and informed reflection.

Over time, the content here will continue to evolve to reflect that shift. My hope is to offer something thoughtful, credible, and practical for anyone trying to understand how age bias actually operates—and what to do when it appears.

together, we can DISRUPT AGEISM & AGE Discrimination

Ageism Is Real examines how age bias shows up—in hiring decisions, workplaces, healthcare, and the everyday assumptions that quietly determine who is taken seriously.

Here, we look closely at the difference between ageism and age discrimination, the stereotypes that sustain both, and the ways experience is too often misread as obsolescence. These are not abstract ideas. They play out in real lives, with real consequences.

This site exists to help people recognize age bias when it appears—and to respond with clarity, perspective, and information. Whether you’re still working, navigating an unexpected pivot, or simply paying closer attention, understanding how ageism operates is the first step toward addressing it.

You’ll find personal stories, thoughtful analysis, and practical resources intended to inform, support, and connect. Ageism Is Real is not about grievance. It’s about visibility, dignity, and agency.

New content is added regularly. If you have a story to share, a resource worth amplifying, or a perspective that adds depth to the conversation, you’re welcome here. This work is stronger when it’s shared.

Age bias thrives in silence.
Visibility is how it begins to lose its power.

BABY BOOMERS REVOLUTIONIZED THE WORKPLACE

Baby Boomers Sure Had It Going On! Here’s Why: Let’s  continue the conversation from our previous article, Baby Boomers Impact on Society. Here we  explore the impact of Baby Boomers on the workplace.  Born between 1946 and 1964, Boomers entered the workforce during the rise of dual-income families, and were key to immense changes that reshaped America’s cultural, social, and economic landscape.  They played a crucial role in championing equal opportunities, breaking down gender stereotypes, and fostering inclusivity. Boomers were the first generation to witness and influence the evolution of the country as it moved from the post-war era into the technical and digital age. In the 1970s, Boomers paved the way for women to enter traditionally male-dominated roles and finally secure positions in corporate management. Would you be surprised to learn that a mere 40 years ago, no management occupation had a majority of women?  It was Baby Boomers who championed women to pursue careers in management, and shatter barriers that once seemed insurmountable. Despite significant progress, a staggering 43%

RECOGNIZE AND CHALLENGE AGEIST BELIEFS

Ageism A unique form of discrimination, ageism can affect anyone, regardless of their age. It involves stereotyping and discriminating against individuals based on their age, whether they are deemed too young or too old. In order to combat ageism and promote inclusivity, it is important to not only recognize ageist beliefs but also take steps to challenge them. It is also unique, because it transcends color, ethnicity, religion and gender. What Are Ageist Beliefs? Ageist beliefs are negative attitudes or stereotypes that unfairly target individuals based on their age. These beliefs can be conscious or unconscious, and may contribute to discrimination against certain age groups. Some common examples of ageist beliefs include assuming that older adults are incapable of learning new skills or technologies, believing that younger people are lazy and entitled, or making assumptions about someone’s abilities or intelligence based solely on their age. Identifying ageist beliefs is an important step towards promoting inclusivity and fighting discrimination. These beliefs can be harmful not only to individuals but also to

EMPLOYER-SPONSORED LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES: A CAUTIONARY TALE FOR OLDER WORKERS

I Was Over 60 and Very Naive When It Came to Life Insurance Thought I would take this opportunity to share  my experience, as an employee of the same corporation for over thirty years.  Before turning sixty, I began increasing my level of life insurance within the company-offered options.  Having survived cancer, I felt lucky to have the option to be able to provide my family with a safety net, should I die before retirement.  While my company’s basic no-cost option was a great benefit, like so many of my peers, I supplemented it and paid the maximum amount each month.  The premium costs escalated as I aged.  Still, I felt secure my family would be well cared for.  However, clearly I was ignorant as to what would happen when I found myself a target in a massive layoff at my company. Forced to take my retirement early. In hindsight, I would have been better off starting out with the company-offered basic insurance, and secured an outside policy when I

AGING WHILE FEMALE: LET’S TALK ABOUT AGEISM AND GENDER BIAS

Introduction   Aging is a natural process that every human being goes through. However, aging while being a woman has its distinct challenges that go beyond physical changes. It is a known fact that women face gender bias throughout their lives, and this bias extends to the way society perceives aging. As women age, they face ageism and stereotypes, and they are expected to adhere to certain norms that men are not held up to. The expectation of looking younger, staying obedient, and being silenced is a common theme. The world needs to understand and acknowledge the challenges that women go through while aging to make it a better journey for everyone. Can Your Age Overshadow Your Accomplishments? 1. The Intersection of Ageism and Gender Bias: Ageism affects both men and women, but gender bias adds another layer of complication for women. Society has deemed women as having a “shelf life.” A woman’s beauty, fertility, and youth are considered her most significant assets. Once these are gone, she is no

MY GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

My husband and I are Baby Boomers, who just celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary. Accomplishing anything spanning five decades is something on it’s own. A marriage, I have learned, is quite unique and worth talking about. At least for me. Since it is my blog, I will ask for your indulgence. (Besides, I forgot to purchase a card….)

AGEISM: UNDERSTANDING ITS HISTORICAL ROOTS

Let’s Start in 1969 … Ageism is a form of discrimination and prejudice against individuals based on their age. This phenomenon has been present in society for centuries.  It continues to evolve over time. The concept of ageism was first introduced in 1969 by Robert Neil Butler, who defined it as “a process of systematic stereotyping or discrimination against people because they are old.” However, the roots of ageism can be traced back to ancient times. In many societies throughout history, older individuals were revered and respected for their wisdom and experience. Elders were seen as valuable members of communities, passing down knowledge and traditions to younger generations. However, with the rise of industrialization and capitalism in the 19th century, the perception of aging shifted. The focus on productivity and efficiency led to a devaluation of older individuals, who were no longer seen as contributing members of society. This shift in attitudes towards aging and older individuals gave rise to ageism, which has become an accepted phenomenon in society. It
