AGEISM IS REAL
I was pushed aside because of my age.
What surprised me most was how many others were too—quietly, and often alone.
Welcome to Ageism is Real.
A Note on Why This Blog Is Back
September 14, 2025
This site went quiet for a while—not because the issue faded, but because my perspective changed. Time gave me distance from the initial experience, and with that came a clearer, steadier voice.
I’m returning to Ageism Is Real with a focus on refinement rather than reaction. The core questions remain the same, but the work now aims for clarity, context, and usefulness—grounded in lived experience and informed reflection.
Over time, the content here will continue to evolve to reflect that shift. My hope is to offer something thoughtful, credible, and practical for anyone trying to understand how age bias actually operates—and what to do when it appears
together, we can DISRUPT AGEISM & AGE Discrimination
Ageism Is Real examines how age bias shows up—in hiring decisions, workplaces, healthcare, and the everyday assumptions that quietly determine who is taken seriously.
Here, we look closely at the difference between ageism and age discrimination, the stereotypes that sustain both, and the ways experience is too often misread as obsolescence. These are not abstract ideas. They play out in real lives, with real consequences.
This site exists to help people recognize age bias when it appears—and to respond with clarity, perspective, and information. Whether you’re still working, navigating an unexpected pivot, or simply paying closer attention, understanding how ageism operates is the first step toward addressing it.
You’ll find personal stories, thoughtful analysis, and practical resources intended to inform, support, and connect. Ageism Is Real is not about grievance. It’s about visibility, dignity, and agency.
New content is added regularly. If you have a story to share, a resource worth amplifying, or a perspective that adds depth to the conversation, you’re welcome here. This work is stronger when it’s shared.
Age bias thrives in silence.
Visibility is how it begins to lose its power.

AGEISM: UNDERSTANDING ITS HISTORICAL ROOTS
Let’s Start in 1969 … Ageism is a form of discrimination and prejudice against individuals based on their age. This phenomenon has been present in society for centuries. It continues to evolve over time. The concept of ageism was first introduced in 1969 by Robert Neil Butler, who defined it as “a process of systematic stereotyping or discrimination against people because they are old.” However, the roots of ageism can be traced back to ancient times. In many societies throughout history, older individuals were revered and respected for their wisdom and experience. Elders were seen as valuable members of communities, passing down knowledge and traditions to younger generations. However, with the rise of industrialization and capitalism in the 19th century, the perception of aging shifted. The focus on productivity and efficiency led to a devaluation of older individuals, who were no longer seen as contributing members of society. This shift in attitudes towards aging and older individuals gave rise to ageism, which has become an accepted phenomenon in society. It

UNSEEN BIAS: MEDICAL AGEISM IN DIAGNOSING KNEE PAIN
Knee Pain. Words That Played a Significant Part of My Life for Decades As someone who worked from home, I spent 8 to 10 hours a day sitting at a desk. I have come to learn that a sedentary lifestyle is not ideal for one’s health. Years ago, I was diagnosed with PatelloFemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), a repetitive motion injury that can be caused by keeping the knee bent for extended periods and then suddenly standing. Despite the discomfort, I’ve learned coping strategies from my medical team developed to manage the pain. However, my knee pain returned with a vengeance, compelling me to once again receive treatment from my new medical care team. Ultimately, I was referred to the orthopedics department. The consultation regarding my recent x-rays was with someone I have come to refer to as Dr. Ageism, although I subsequently learned he is a physician’s assistant. That encounter left me feeling both insulted and dismissed. My Experience: More Than Just Gray Hair I began explaining my work conditions

WORKPLACE AGE DISCRIMINATION: MASS LAYOFFS
The Impact of Mass Layoffs for Employees Over 50 Introduction: Workplace age discrimination often comes in the form of mass layoffs. The uncertainty and chaos it brings can be overwhelming, especially if you’re close to retirement. What if sudden corporate downsizing forces you to retire early? Or maybe you are part of the ‘Sandwich Generation,’ juggling aging parents and children. That’s a double whammy! Mass layoffs can be a covert form of workplace age discrimination. Forced retirement has a profound impact on retirees, disrupting their well-thought-out plans. Many, like myself, have dedicated years to a company only to be abruptly told to retire. In this article, we look at the effects of forced retirement on employees. We provide coping strategies for those who survive it and offer resources to help navigate this challenging process. The Issue of Forced Retirement: Mass layoffs target workers over the age of 50. So, in many cases, mass layoffs force early retirement. HOW AGE BIAS CUTS BOTH WAYS
Age bias cuts both ways and affects individuals under 30 personally and professionally. Ageism extends beyond the workplace, affecting access to healthcare and social inclusion, and perpetuating negative stereotypes.

Did You Know May Is Older Americans’ Month? (OAM)
MENTAL HEALTH IN THE DIGITAL AGE: FINDING BALANCE IN A CONNECTED WORLD Introduction In honor of Older Americans’ Month, I am turning a year older, and have returned to the keyboard. Have been away from my blog for a bit. When I logged in today to post a new article, I was surprised to find the platform had rearranged some things in my absence. Like adding a duplicate, and larger image to each of my posts. Gremlins? Or have I lost some technical expertise I once used every day on my job? A puzzle. That said, in an era where our digital devices often feel like extensions of our bodies, it’s crucial to remember the impact this constant connectivity can have on our mental health. For older adults, the challenge is twofold: navigating the digital landscape’s vastness while preserving mental well-being in a world that sometimes feels like it’s moving too fast. The Double-edged Sword of Digital Connectivity There’s no denying the benefits of digital technology. For many of us,

Overcoming Age Discrimination After a Layoff: Rewrite the Story You Tell Yourself
Introduction Few things in life are as jolting as losing a job you’ve dedicated your heart and soul to. For many of us, our careers aren’t just what we do—they’re who we are. Walking away from a role, voluntarily or not, isn’t just about losing a paycheck; it’s about losing something far more personal—our sense of identity, purpose, and pride. And when that loss comes laced with the sting of age discrimination, it can feel particularly personal. You might find yourself stuck replaying the narrative society imposes—the pernicious whispers suggesting your best years are behind you or that your worth has an expiration date. I know this story well because I lived it. A New Story, A New Beginning For 36 years, I dedicated myself to one company, AT&T. It wasn’t just a job; it was a defining part of who I was. I found joy, purpose, and pride in my work and the relationships I built. When that chapter suddenly closed, I was left reeling. My value felt tarnished,
