Overcoming Age Discrimination After a Layoff: Rewrite the Story You Tell Yourself

Introduction

Few things in life are as jolting as losing a job you’ve dedicated your heart and soul to. For many of us, our careers aren’t just what we do—they’re who we are. Walking away from a role, voluntarily or not, isn’t just about losing a paycheck; it’s about losing something far more personal—our sense of identity, purpose, and pride.

And when that loss comes laced with the sting of age discrimination, it can feel particularly personal. You might find yourself stuck replaying the narrative society imposes—the pernicious whispers suggesting your best years are behind you or that your worth has an expiration date. I know this story well because I lived it.

A New Story, A New Beginning

For 36 years, I dedicated myself to one company, AT&T. It wasn’t just a job; it was a defining part of who I was. I found joy, purpose, and pride in my work and the relationships I built. When that chapter suddenly closed, I was left reeling. My value felt tarnished, my confidence shattered. It felt as though all my dedication and passion had been reduced to insignificance in an instant.

But here’s the truth I’ve fought hard to reclaim—those years weren’t wasted, nor was their value erased by a decision I couldn’t control. I’ve chosen to rewrite the story I tell myself about that chapter and its abrupt ending.

I didn’t “fail.” Instead, my tenure stands as proof of my strength, resilience, and commitment. More than three decades of experience didn’t vanish with my departure. Those years shaped me into the leader, team player, and problem-solver I am today.

I wasn’t “discarded.” I was released into the opportunity to reimagine my path, to explore who I am beyond the boundaries of one company or one title. My potential wasn’t ended; it’s being redefined on my terms.

And perhaps most importantly, my worth is not defined by someone else’s decisions. It’s defined by how I choose to rise, rebuild, and reclaim my future.

Rewriting Your Story

If you’ve experienced the pain of a layoff, especially one tainted with age discrimination, I hope you’ll hear this message clearly—you are not defined by someone else’s judgment of your value. Their story of you does not dictate your future.

It’s okay to grieve. The pain, the frustration, and the sense of loss are real. But you don’t have to stay in that story.  Here are some steps that were shared with me on how you can begin to rewrite it:

1. Acknowledge the Loss but Look Beyond It

Every end is hard. It’s human to feel hurt, betrayed, or even scared. But after you’ve given yourself the space to feel, shift your focus. Your career might have paused, but your skills, your expertise, and your work ethic remain unchanged. It’s time to look beyond the loss and toward a new chapter.

2. Recognize Your Value

You are more than any single role or job title. Write down your skills, unique accomplishments, and the qualities that make you a standout professional—and a person of worth. You’ve overcome challenges, driven results, and left a mark. You have people in your Tribe that know your worth in their lives. The impact you have made. The love you have shared and has been shared with you. Don’t ever lose sight of that.

3. Reframe the Narrative

The way we frame our experiences actually shapes how we move forward. Instead of focusing on the story society often tells about older professionals, tell a story of growth, experience, and opportunity. You’ve invested years in honing your craft—now use that as a launchpad for your next adventure.

4. Set New Goals

Ask yourself, “What’s next?” Maybe this is the moment to explore an industry you’ve always admired. Perhaps you’ve dreamed of starting your own business or taking on work with greater flexibility. Define the future you want and start taking small, concrete steps toward it.

5. Find Your Community

You’re not alone in feeling the sting of ageism or navigating how to begin again. Connect with others who have been where you are, whether through professional networks, community groups, or online forums. Sharing your story with others can empower you and remind you that you are part of a network of resilient trailblazers.

Your New Battlecry

I’ve chosen to define my next chapter with three words:

Rise. Rebuild. Reclaim.

  • I will rise above the pain and rewrite the story of my worth.
  • I will rebuild my sense of purpose, recognizing the boundless opportunities ahead of me.
  • I will reclaim my power, my potential, and my pride.

Take Your Power Back

Being laid off is not the end of your story—it’s the beginning of a new one. It’s a chance to confront and overcome the societal narratives that too often diminish us. It’s an opportunity to tell yourself the truth about your worth, to redefine your path, and to take bold, intentional steps toward a future that you shape.

It’s time to write your own story. Start today, and make it one filled with strength, growth, and possibility.
